    Black Tailed Godwits Fighting

Now is the time of the year to look out for black tailed godwits fighting as they defend their feeding ground and show off to the ladies. It is about 5 years since we have seen fighting on the Brownsea lagoon but on Saturday we were lucky enough to witness it again. All shot with the Sigma 150-600

The fight starts by grabbing each other by the beak

and quickly escalates to violence with one trying to stab the other

and then one jumps up onto the others back and tries to push him under the water trying to "drown" him

The whole thing is over in under a minute before one wanders off and goes back to feeding as if nothing has happened, until a few minutes later another comes in the try his luck

A great set, worthy of being chosen for Springwatch or anything else. Would like to see one of these, let alone such interesting behaviour. Aaah, the attractions of Dorset and area, unfortunately not an option for me, stuck here for eternity!
