    Locked on Target

I have been doing a bit of housekeeping on the Computer and I came across the image that I got the award for.

It wasn't one of my particular favourites, which is why I did't recognise the title, but the Camera Club Selection Committee seemed to like it and so did the Selection Committee of the Southern Federation. They must know something that I don't, so there you have it, mystery solved and here it is:

Colin, it may not be one of your favourites but it is still a very good picture; you’ve got its yellow eyes looking right at the camera and the contrast against the dark sky. Nice.

Thanks Ian and Paul, you may well be right.

To me there wasn't a lot of effort involved in taking the image. I was in the right place at the right time, took a couple of shots, she seemed to look straight at me, so instinctively I took another couple of shots. Bring up the sky a bit, crop just a little for a decent composition and job done.

I suppose as photographers are favourite babies are based on how much effort we have invested in them. Some of my wildlife shots take weeks, months, or even years to come to fruition, so I will naturally think more highly of them than I would a grab shot.

However, I am very much aware that someone viewing the image would not know (or care) how much effort, equipment and experience went into the shot, they only judge the image for what it is, either liking it or not. And perhaps that is how it should be.

It’s a cracker Colin. I wonder sometimes if we’re the best people to judge our own work?

Watching Master of Photography on Sky, they often have specialists in the field that come in and help with selection and more often than not the advisor and the photographer disagree on the final selections. It’s why writers have an editor I guess...

Oh my, what an astounding image. No wonder you won, Colin. For you it was a grab shot, but you under estimate your skill, as you had the camera set correctly, bringing the camera up, nailing the focus while it was inflight, and not getting overly excited at capturing a beautiful bird. That my friend takes skill, so pat yourself on the back for taking a great image.

She is a captive bird from The Hawk Conservancy Trust, nr Andover.

She was originally thought to be a male and therefore named "Sweeney Todd", in line with the naming protocols for her year of birth. In line with many raptor species, juveniles retain female feather patterns until the first/second year moult when the males will change to the male feather pattern. Therefore it took 2 years to find out that he was definitely a she, but the name Sweeney Todd stayed with her.

Excellent work Colin the title and the quality of the image all come together nicely. I’m proud for you even if you are a bit under whelmed. I shall do a little excited bounce around on your behalf [emoji6]

Tom is absolutely right that even if this was a grab shot, it was still years of experience and flawless technique that enabled you to grab it so well. And if anyone else had said the same in their post, you would have very kindly made that point to them. Beautiful image and well deserving of all the accolade.
