Peter, its done by Grid or Block normally at a high tide roost. Basically the birds are counted in a selected area, then that area is multiplied by the number of like size areas. 137 birds counted in a selected area. then adjoining like size area's are counted, -- 135 birds x 7 like size area's = 945 birds. It is quite accurate
