    Bird ID please!

    Hi

I took several shots of this bird, but I can't settle on an ID! Can you help please?

It was on the floor under some feeders, and is about a large sparrow size.

What is this by mikep_eos, on Flickr

Hope to hear back from someone so I can cross him off my list!

    Many thanks, Mike.

Thanks Brian - but I'm not sure on that as the eye stripe looks too pronounced. My books suggest it 'could' be a Reed Bunting. Possible juvenile in 1st winter colours?

Happy to hear any other views - they all look so similar!

Were you near a reed bed? If no then a dunnock - a common bird

The flash will bring out the markings

Yes! I was at Arundel WWT, very near the reed beds, but actually in a wooded patch nearby. I should have mentioned where I was earlier!

          Cheers, Mike.

Look under the chin at the stripes and colours - I would still say a dunnock. I think the beak is more finchlike whereas the bunting has a thinner beak.

Looking again - I am not quite sure

                Mike

Female Reed Bunting. The beak indicates a member of the large Bunting family.

The Dunnock whilst of similar size & colouring is a member of the Accentor family of birds who all have thin beaks.

                Good advice at http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/families/

Looks like a female linnet to me or, possibly, a twite. They are often difficult to tell apart.

                    Female Reed Bunting.
I would agree, apart from the colouring , the beak is not right for any of the other suggestions.

If I have any wildlife I am not sure of, I always post on Wild About Britain for a quick confirmation of ID

I was going to suggest a Corn Bunting but a Reed Bunting is nearer the mark I think
                      Definately not a Dunnock

Thanks Brian, Stephen, Bob, Ian, Stan and Mike!

So Dunnock, Linnet, Harris Hawk (? - LOL, you're mad! ), Corn Bunting... I'll post on the Wild About Britain site and see what comes back! I'll update if I get to the bottom of it!

                        cheers all. Mike.

Just checking again, because you were at Arundel then maybe a "Lapland Bunting" with winter plumage.

                            100% Reed Bunting

Wrong facial plumages for a Lapland Bunting
