3 plants all sharing a name, and all growing around the coast.
The first two are cliff-dwellers -
This is Rock Samphire, Crithmum maritimum -
And Golden Samphire, Inula crithmoides -
And this one is the Marsh Samphire, or Glasswort, Salicornia europaea -
That last one grows on muddy salt-marshes - didn't carry a camera 'cos was cutting some of this to eat - it's the French "Salicornes". Delicious with a bit of butter and black pepper. Photographed on a plate....
Interesting possibilities for the name "Samphire". Could have derived from "St Pierre", i.e. St Peter, the patron saint of fisherman, being the first plant such people would see when staggering ashore with their catches. Or, still with St Peter, imagine them turned upside down and they could resemble a bunch of keys - the keys to Heaven, another of St Peter's jobs.... and the Glasswort name comes from the soda in its ashes used for glass-making - often a coastal process because of the need for sand.
All 7D + EF100mm L IS or 24-105L.
Cheers, Chris.
