    White Orchids

This is my first attempt at this, but I thought it was worth a shot. White orchids in front of a black t-shirt and lit using on camera flash, bounced from the ceiling using a sto-fen diffuser. If I was any better or had the patience to, I'd work on removing the black wooden supporting stick from the image, I think it would look cleaner.

    Re: White Orchids

nice, I would have been tempted to loose the under exposed ones on the bottom left - and the support. The advantage you have is with the black background so editing this would be very easy, come on give it a bash

I think also the whites need pulling back a tad as that will help pull the detail on the flowers

Well taken - I agree that the whites are a tad too bright.

The whites can be pulled back quite easily and the shot tidied with simple cloning followed by a touch of saturation to bring out the green and yellow

As a further thought, it also works with the flowers on the bottom left removed so that the stem just flows from corner to corner

                looks good Stan..

if it was me I would have run the stem off the bottom corner so it looks like its being held up rather than just floating in the air.. I do think sometimes these plants / flowers look odd just floating and whether a stem fading off to nothing doesn't improve

Thanks for that, I'm going to spend some time now making an edit, your feedback is always welcome!
One of the difficulties I found was that the flowers were so large, with a small background, I struggled to get a tight crop without trimming the flowers or moving too much to and capturing a wider scene of my messy kitchen... I will be back with another edit!

                      Re: White Orchids

much better edit, but if you look at your whites you'll see they are very washed out - this can be sorted easily within PP by adjusting the highlights - what program are you using for PP ?

I'm using Aperture. When I view them on my MacBook in full screen they look good to me, I can attempt to draw them back a little, but they looked grey when I did it earlier.

I don't know Aperture but I'm sure it probably has similar features to LR ... BTW Aperture isn't being updated anymore so it maybe worthwhile considering upgrading to another editor

If you look at Stans edit that gives you a better idea of the highlights - Viewing it on an iMac its still looking pretty blown here as you can't see any detail in the top flowers, but you can in Stans

you could possibly use the mid contrast adjustment in aperture ,or if you go to the drop down menu on the left you can also access and add a curves menu that might help
