    Lupin Abstract

While at Hillier Garden on Sunday, thought we would try out the "moving camera during exposure" which is more often applied to trees, on the lupins. Its a fine line between complete blur and retaining some detail in the flowers. Dee's was the best of the shots we tried, at 1/20, f18 and ISO 100

I always feel if there's some part of the picture that's in focus then you could call the OOF part "artwork"

    But when it's all OOF............well I call that a mistake !!

So it's a "no" from me I'm afraid, despite the pretty purple colour

Quite like it myself but would be tempted to loose most of green at top of the frame.

this sort of shot is more usual in a wooded area there you have rows of tall trees and by moving the camera during the exposure everything is always going to be OOF - so not a mistake and a project that regularly appears in camera magazines. If you have a picture where only part is in focus then that is narrow depth of field.

The effect is not something I have seen applied to flowers but the lupins are tall and thin, just like the trees in the wood so as an experiment it is something worth trying out

                  Re: Lupin Abstract

Now I like that! Mostly I find these kind of shots less effective than they ought to be but here it works. I think it has just the right blend of good bright colours coupled with just the right amount of movement. The end result has a very Impressionist feel about it - more than a touch Monet to me- and should look fabulous printed, framed and hung on the wall...

                  PS congratulations to Dee.

                      Re: Lupin Abstract

I agree with Sid, I really like it and I just don't get the idea that part should be in focus at all, to have part in focus would completely negate the effect to me. Open to debate about cropping a tad off the top but other than that I like it.

                      Regards Paul

To experiment is good, I've looked at this a number of times without commenting. As an image it has grown on me. I have seen similar images which have mainly been of tree trunks/forests. However the colours of the lupin add an extra dimension to this, well done Dee

It's always a pleasure to see some creative photography - sometimes it works, sometime not. For me, it works well and the more I come back to look at it the more pleasing I find it

I like this a lot Stan - although I'm with ant in that I think losing the mostly green portion at the top improves it for me. Well done Dee. I was out on Sunday trying to take some long exposures and when I finished I tried something similar but in the horizontal plain with butter cups - guess I should get them up here for c&c.

After looking at this several times Stan, I have finally decided I quite like it - I think it would look great printed if very large and hanging on a wall.
