    Lace cap hydrangea

    These flower heads are really wierd.

    The large pink items which look like petals are in fact sepals and the actual flower with its petals is in the middle. These flowers have 4 petals and 8 stamens.

    The mass of small items in the centre of the head are also flowers, but these have 5 petals and 10 stamens.

    Both types seem to have 3 pistils rather than the normal single one.

    Ain't nature wonderful!
