    Risen From The Dead.

Many years ago we had to sadly have our mature Ash cut down, left the last 6feet as it was in between two sheds and as it has rotten so nature has taken over. The Rowan has sprouted on the right and new Ash growth on the left. The Greater Spotted Woodpeckers enjoy removing grubs during the winter, hence the lunar appearance on the wood.

Great David. I love old rotten stumps they are mini nature reserves in their own right. When we have a tree come down I log it up for the wood burner but always leave a section of the trunk to decay. Other than the value they are to invertebrates, and to birds such as woodpeckers that feed n them. They can also host a good selection of fungi in the autumn.
