      I have also been a little baffled.
      Firstly I thought it was a fly, but flies have only one pair of wings, this has two.
      Then there is the stinger.
      The insect is clearly dead and has lost some of the colour pigments.
      I'm still baffled but guess it is a bee or wasp

        It looks like a hornet to me - they can grow to a fair size.
