    'Armored' flying ants?

Took a damp stroll through the woods trying to take my mind off 'things' and came across a very wet tree stump with some fungi on it

what you cant really see here is that it was crawling with flying ants - that is they were climbing to the top and sort of half flying half jumping down again, all I could think was they are newly hatched - do they do that?

    few closer shots: Armour plating?

Missed the focus on it's head even at 1/800 as it jumped AT me

Strange looking creatures. Nicely captured David. Also glad to see you back posting. How are things going for you?

Thanks Tom, didn't mean for it to go so long between post's - have put brief update in the 'apologies' post in the 'pub'.

Will not leave it so long next time

I find the 1st picture reminiscent of shellfish on rocks. Not seen that before.
Are these wood ants? See plenty of these in the forests around here. Not sure I would go that close. Aggressive little so and so's.

Absolutely, #3 for me - I love trying to catch things on the wing and wish I could get more of this quality, David, even if you did miss the head by a mm. What f stop and ISO did you use?

Quite amazing, David, not least that you had it set to f2.8 - as if the shot wasn't hard enough already!
