    Migrant Hawkers in Flight

    At Barnes on Sunday we managed a good variety of flight shots from different areas of the reserve and against different backgrounds - we were quite lucky as they did stay still for slightly longer than the usual micro second

        Very nice shots Stan (and Dee?)

        Interesting looking at the shutter speeds... I think about 1/640 - 1/800 is about right! Whilst the 1/1250 shot is superb, you can almost see the cloned out piece of string holding it up!

        This is about the best I've seen the Dragonflies, and they won't be around much longer, sadly!

        Cheers, Mike.

                  Thanks everyone

                  We were very lucky on Sunday, as well as seeing a good few of them, so plenty of opportunity to practice they were seeming to hover a lot longer than usual, so a little bit easier to nail the shot

                  Very nice shots Stan (and Dee?)
                  the first one is Dee's - as we upload everything to the same flickr account, hers always have " * " in the title

                  Interesting looking at the shutter speeds... I think about 1/640 - 1/800 is about right! Whilst the 1/1250 shot is superb, you can almost see the cloned out piece of string holding it up!

                  it also shows just how fast a dragonfly wings beat - little or no detail in speeds up to 1/640 and 1/2500 needed to , almost freeze them

                      Hi Stan;

                      Excellent shots as always, but what's really interesting is the relationship of the wings in #4. Seems they are beating almost on a contra-rotating system. I.e left-forward is complimentary to right-rear while right-forward is complimentary to left-rear!

                      I may well of course b talking absolute tosh, but that's what it looks like to me...

                      Cheers;

                        yes

                        I think it is just that the front wings are not synchronised with the rear so that when the front ones are up the rear are down
