    Sand Crab

Photographing on Fort Myers Beach just before sunset the other day we noticed and number of holes/burrows on the beach and caught sight of something disappearing down one of them. So decided to hang around for a few minutes and sure enough this popped his head up out of the sand. No more than a couple of inches long

Thanks Paul and Tom for looking

Was beginning to wonder if there was any forum interest these days in small creatures - very few comments on any of the images lately

Sorry Stan - just seen this.
I for one, love diversity, so keep them coming. Anyhow, great shot - well seen and captured

            thanks for looking James

I wasn't just referring to this shot but "small creatures" generally - there have been only 13 new threads posted since mid august and not a lot of feedback on most - although looking at the forum in general activity does seem to have dropped off quite considerably in the past couple of months - just hope it is not going the way of another Canon orientated forum where a post can go days without any response

                  Re: Sand Crab

Nice shot- they can be quite "nervous" and hard to approach. Understand what you have said about the popularity of small creatures, but do keep shooting and posting.
You called this a sand crab. Is it one of the ghost crabs, genus Ocypode? Live on sandy shores and dive into holes in the sand if approached? Have spent some time watching them in the Galapagos - the rest of our small party was watching a sea lion give birth but I preferred the crabs.
                  Cheers, Chris.

sand crab was the easiest description as I couldn't find anything else at the time on Google. From your description of their behaviour, I would imagine they are probably one of the family of ghost crabs
