          good detail bearing in mind the lens used - even the big flies are really too small to shoot with a big lens and you can get much more detail using a macro lens as evidenced by my recent shots of the robber and horse flies in the macro section - mind you got to go with the lenses you have

          didn't fancy getting any closer it looked a nasty bugger
          quite harmless unlike the female horse flies which do bite

            As stated Stan never seen one before ,so obviously wary .and even if I had a macro lens I wouldn't have changed over in Sandy (dunes) environment

              Should have requested Jan to hold it in her palm whilst you took the photograph or even done it vice versa!!!!!

                I'm pretty sure this species is Philonicus albiceps which is the typical robber fly of sand dunes, very rarely found anywhere else. Like all robber flies it is, of course, quite harmless, unless you are another fly in which case it will suck all your juices out leaving nothing but an empty dry husk ........
