    Fly - Anthomyidae Procellaris

    This one does not appear to have a common name but a beautiful fly a bit like a chess board. It is of the family Anthomyidae of which there are loads of variations and this resembles most closely

      Does look very much like a male of Anthomyia procellaris. Most Anthomyiidae are much duller and more ordinary looking, need examination of the male bits to determine species.

      Really top macro photos. However, it would be interesting to see EXIF data and it's difficult to find particular images of yours on Flickr. I can find lots of puffins, but can't find these

        I'll take your word for it, regarding the name
        there was nothing in the Collins book so I put this on a facebook bugs site and got the family name, googled that and found some shots and two which were most like this one. Was going to say Richard would probably have an accurate ID and..
