Have you tried using the 300mm with extension tubes in place of the 1.4x converter?

I have a set of Jessops tubes but very rarely use them and certainly not on the 300f4. You have given me an excuse to pick up the camera, although I'm not supposed to yet , and do an experiment, which I'm putting on a seperate thread
