    Small Blue on a Dee

We went to Martin Down nature reserve today, a site we only discovered last year which is a mecca for butterflies. We were a bit early in the season for some of the larger ones who will appear late June/July but even so we spotted and shot 12 different specis. Whilst sitting on the grass for lunch a small blue butterfly became quite inquisitive, checking out the camera bags and then deciding he quite fancied Dee coming back time again to land on her finger and wrist. A very small butterfly which is illustrated by the third shot when he landed on her watch, the face of which is very small

just goes to prove what I say, Dee is very sweet - really!

Well done to capture these, if I remember rightly the Small Blue is the smallest butterfly in the UK

        Thanks Brian and Di

its one of the smallest with a wing span of 25mm. We also got shots of the common blue which can be as small and the silver studded blue which is a little bigger. The small and large skippers are also around the same size

Thanks very much Rutgar David and Joanne

Meant to say earlier that these were shot with the genuine macro lens rather than my usual long macro - 300f4 + 1.4x - which was used for much of the rest of the day
