Monarch Flower - with canon 100 f2.8 L IS & MR-14 EX

Gave my new macro lens and MR-14 ring flash a good workout yesterday at Studley Butterflies, near Swindon. Camera was set on manual mode at ISO 400, 1/200 at f8, flash in ETTL with compensation varied according to available light. This shot is of a couple of monarchs mating and the pose reminded me of a flower head

Beautiful colouring Stan and lens looks pretty good too. The only thing I have against ring flash is that the lighting is very flat.

The only thing I have against ring flash is that the lighting is very flat.

without the flash the ISO would have needed to be very high and still have a low shutter speed and the background would be as bright as the subject so flash is the way to go but even with a standard speedlight there would be no room to set it up off camera.

I see where your coming from with this, it does look like a flower.
