Russell's edit is really interesting. When he first suggested it, I took off a lot more of the grass than his example above, so basically I was just left with the buildings and a sliver of green. I also liked that a lot; a very different view from what you were trying to achieve with the long foreground, but good nonetheless and I couldn't decide a preference. With respect to the version above, I don't think this edit works as well as the two extremes as it is neither one thing nor the other. Yes, I can see the use of thirds, but it doesn't quite work for me.
The main problem with my 'full on' crop is that the distortion of the central white building becomes very obvious.
