Monaco from one day to the next

Two pano's showing the extreme of the weather I experienced over the two days.

First is from Saturday looking towards the pits in 26 degrees

So my question is, Was the seating convex or is that due to the Pano' especially the 2nd image? The reason I ask is because I've seen some with a convex foreground when it should be straight and then some are straight as a board.

Well Tom. The seating was a little convex in the second and plumb straight in the first. It's all the effect of the pano making them look odd, which I kinda like. Almost a fisheye look to them

The effect is nice, but what causes it to convex that much and if you wanted to have it straight is the secret?

Good question Tom, I've no idea. Thinking back there is a bit of a curve on the track but not that much. The pits are straight so yes, why are the stands curved? Anyone?

Thanks Ian. I'm sure that a few look forward to the rain, it's a great leveller

Re: Monaco from one day to the next

                Nice shots of Monaco

                To answer Tom's question...

The reason foregrounds curve is not lens distortion but for some of the images being stitched the camera is looking along the foreground in addition to being at a right angle for the central shot.

Imagine a three pane stitch with a straight foreground. The left image would have the foreground running bottom right to top left. In the centre image the foreground would be parallel with the bottom of the frame. The right image the foreground would run from the bottom left to the top right.

As per this recent pano of Ullapool where the sea wall was straight:
IMG_4378-Edit by John Leah, on Flickr

The only way to get a straight foreground with a pano stitch is to keep the camera at a right angle to the view and move the viewing position along for each shot.

                Cheers,
                John

How did you stitch them? I'd be very interested to see the second one with the people cropped out and the horizontal lines straightened...

It was stitched inside of LR but also had verticals straightened within PS. The track at that point does have a concave curve to it but not as much as the shot shows. I'll try to give it another go and see how accurate I can make it
