    Reflection 4 ways

My wife and I had the privilege to attend a same sex wedding last evening. During the reception and at the cake cutting I was able to get this image of the couple cutting their cake.

    Camera EOS M w/EF-22mm f/2 STM
    1/40 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 800 (Flash EX 270 fired)

The 1st image was processed in LR, then into Elements 13 w/Elements+ Plugin. I use Elements+ because the plug in allows me the curve tool that I used to lighten the reflection in the Mirror as a adjustment Layer that allowed me to apply a mask that only lightened the reflection in the mirror.

Saved and closed this image back to LR, then reopened the image from LR back into Elements 13 w/Elements+. Here I used the B&W tool in Elements+ (Similar to the BW Tool in Photo Shop) & the Curves Tool to create the BW Images.

Saved and closed the image back to LR, then reopened it back into Elements 13. In Elements 13 I opened the color image, selected it, copied it & pasted it as a layer on the BW image, changed that color layer to a mask and then did the color popping:

Saved & Closed the BW image to LR, then reopened the BW image to Elements 13 and repeated that last process for this image.

Saved and closed that image to LR.

SO which of the 4 do you like?

    HI Tom,

All that magenta is very overpowering for a first time viewer, and for me detracts from the couple which is after all what it's about.

If we're moving away from mono- a bit boring here- I'd go for nš 4 as there's just a tinge of colour and the reflection doesn't take over.

    Nice work.

Thanks Bo, Ian & Chris. I'm glad I wasn't the hired photographer for that event. The lighting in that room was horrible with this magenta/purple lighting the whole room. I watched the photographers and they did not use any anything to set their white balance, so I hope they were shooting raw. However talking with the assistant, I have my doubts.

someone is going to have a nightmare processing that ....Its funny when you say about watching the pros as you see some pretty awful work being done by these "so called" pros - I was at a wedding recently and the guy was shooting away with a Canon 7D so I walked up and started chatting and he does all his wedding in Jpeg and never Raw - I asked him about white balance especially with things like a white wedding dress and his response was " A Jpeg will sort it " Mmmmmm pro's my foot

A very interesting take Tom and well done for thinking and achieving it. Personally of the 4 the full mono works for me. However, have you tried desaturating the magenta's and keeping them full colour?

What a nightmare of a location Tom. I admire your determination to get the best out of it with your processing. I agree that of the colour shots the last one is the best, but if it were my wedding album I'd choose the B&W.

                    Re: Reflection 4 ways

I know what you mean Ian. When my youngest got married she hired a so called pro and I had a long talk with him and he claimed to be a teacher of photography and that one of the signs of a pro is that they can produce excellent photos shooting just in jpeg. Walked away scratching my head and wallet thinking that this yahoo just cost me $3000.00.

Russell, tried to lower both the saturation and luminance to fend off the purple/magenta and because the entire room was lighted with this type of lighting the over all image suffers with lake of saturation and darkens the image to a unnatural look. For me the best solution was BW.
