Focusing problem on my new 500D

As per attached example. I've had several shots of 2-3 people and one face is crystal clear and the other subdued/out of focus. Only just received the camera and I believe this problem has reared its head in Auto and M mode.

    Any insight/advice will be appreciated.

sorry there's a server problem, won't let me upload. Any offers to email it to anyone for a look at would be welcome

Try putting the image up on Flickr or PhotoBucket and link to it - if the upload problem persists.

Without knowing your level of experience, I respectfully suggest that you check what aperture you're using. This sounds like a narrow depth-of-field issue rather than a focussing problem. Try stepping down the aperture from say f/4-5.6 to f/8-11. Does it make a difference?
I actively encourage constructive comment & critique of any image I post!
Feel free to edit & re-post as you see fit - but please - tell me what you have done to 'improve' the shot!

Anyone else having difficulty uploading jpegs to this site? I just wait ages whilst it says uploading, then I get a Server/Timeout error???
