    Hot Stuff

As I was ‘house bound’ yesterday waiting in for people to call I had a play, what do you think?

All taken with 5D3, pepper with 100mm macro and smoke with 50mm f1.8

    Re: Hot Stuff

I think you have far to much time on your hands, however, if you are producing something like this then all is forgiven...

Like the second one better as, to me anyway, the three lots of smoke in #1 are very obviously copies of the same whereas #2 the smoke has more "movement"
How about a bit of "heat haze" shimmering of the body of the pepper to show the heat inside causing the smoke..... this will fill in a couple of hours for you today

Thanks David, with regard to #1 I agree and for #2 I will give the heat haze some thought.

I will be house bound again all next week as we are having work done on the house so undoubtedly there will be more items to play with.

Geeroovey colours! Nice effect. #2 is best.

I think you must have been smoking the joss sticks - I can see a frog leaping off a cliff in the last one. Honest.

Thanks for the comments, science lesson and observation about the frog, I hadn't seen that until you mentioned it

Excellent; as others my preference is for #2... I really must try something like that...

If I may ask; what did you use as the backdrop, and how did you light it please?

                  Cheers;

Lee, thanks for the comments, the backdrop was an A1 piece of black card and I didn't light it. With the smoke I had 2 pieces of card one either side of a single 580 EXii flash which was placed at 90 degrees to the background and camera to prevent any light hitting the background or lens, to help with focus I had a simple halogen desk lamp opposite the flash pointed at the smoke to make it visible.

With the pepper which was placed on a black mat and again used the black card as a background I used a couple of 150W (low energy bulb rating) tabletop lighting units with softbox to light the pepper and again positioned them so that only the pepper was illuminated. The lights I have each have 3x50W (200w tungsten equiv) low energy daylight bulbs which are independantly controlled so I simply turned off a couple of the bulbs until I had an even light on the subject.

I hope that helps answer your query.

Just noticed the frog and that has given me some ideas for a smoke picture.

A couple of great images there

The frog obviously makes the second image

Have you considered using a Chilli instead of the pepper, I'm thinking a nice large Scotch Bonnet would do nicley.
