    Re: Over we go

great action and well caught but its looking soft here especially the head, maybe down to being to wide

looking at the ISO clearly you were up against it with light but is 1/500 fast enough to stop this type of action?

    still very well caught !

Well caught action, her head does look a little soft to me as well, is that down to movement, I wonder?

Her shoes and the logo on the bar seem sharp though.

Thanks for the comment Tigger. I think the 500 is fast enough but I will try something faster next time out. My guess is that the f4.5 does not give enough DOF. I guess I need more practice at focussing on the head to give that extra sharpness and maybe up the f setting a bit. Again for next time out

Thanks Peter - I think the DOF issue is the one.

Agree - its a combination of shallow DoF and being slow. I would have thought a 1DX would be able to shoot at much higher ISO ranges?

Looking forward to seeing your next shot as this is nearly right on the money

Good action catch, in fact I can't see how the 'pose' could be any better, but as others have said, a bit soft, still damn good though.

Yes very well caught. I do like the blur and movement in her hair.

                  Re: Over we go

Wow, I missed this last week. Technical criticism obviously highlighted already but it's a damn fine shot regardless. I often see suggestion that a certain shutter speed will freeze the action but in practice I find that you can often be surprised at how fast certain body parts will be moving. Given the lens and aperture used I would think it partly dof here, but the hair flick is likely to be fast enough to beat the shutter.

                    Thanks Paul, Alan and Paul.
For the next time I get the opportunity to cover high jump, I have decided to up the F setting - maybe a stop

Good action shot with the competitor well placed. I take it ISO 4000 is a typo but it wouldn't hurt to go to ISO 650/800 - I have used these ratings for my sport photography with my 5D MK 3 similarly with my 7D MK 2 for bird photography.

No typo Fotofan - remember this is indoors and the light levels are significantly lower to being outdoors

Spot on with the timing just a little out on the focus (face needs to be sharp) but overall i think you've managed to shoot it well.

Its a really good shot the more i look the better it is, but unfortunately it has to be sharp in the right areas (though i do know how difficult that can be),such a shame as everything else look so right.
