    National Hunt racing Musselburgh

Although I've been a member since 2009 it's a while since I came back to the forum, seeking help/advice relating to my recently acquired 7D which replaced my 40D.

For its first real outing I took it to the last jumps race meeting at Musselburgh race-course on 19th February. I quite often go there (you can get on to the course free, legitimately!) and I prefer the NH races. This season for some unknown reason they shifted the hurdles to much nearer the rail on the inside of the track making photographing the horses difficult so I positioned myself at the end of the back straight and photographed them as they were coming to the bend.

I had my 10/200 f4 L USM lens plus 1.4 TC on the 70D. For once it was bright and sunny but there was a really cold wind. I had the camera on a monopod. Those of you who've been around for a while will know the name Uni-Loc who made tripods that could be configured using an Allen key supplied and the instructions showed how to make 2 different monopods.

Good action shot. Rather tight in the frame IMHO, but it does concentrate the action!

Thanks Andrew. To make life difficult for photographers they had excluded part of the track with rails which diverted the horses away from the inside rail and naturally the horses went for the shortest line!

I like the action but again like your other posts it is very soft which is probably down to the direct upload or possibly as well, too slow a shutter speed - would be more helpful to include the exif info with your posts

Scotsdave, very nicely composed, with all 5 horses and riders lined up and visible. Great sense of movement, I feel like I'm there with you.

Yes a good action shot with some real power to it too. As others have mentioned though, too tight and soft due to the direct upload.

Was this shot with the 7D or 70D?

I like the tight frame of this, but need to see it via flickr nice and sharp

Yes, a nice shot, with a good angle on the action.

Would have liked a bit more space all around but presume as you had a TF lens plus convertor you have cropped the image to get this far. So I guess you can correct this from the original?

Canon EOS R5, R6 plus the usual suspects ......
