    Inside the last furlong

Went to the racing at Royal Windsor racecourse on Monday evening. Not the best evening with poor light and drizzle but took the camera anyway and was quite pleased with this one...

Inside the last furlong by Andrew Bird, on Flickr

Always barriers of course but the action is quite close and seeing a racehorse at full gallop was quite an experience!

I'd say thats a great shot and love the composition

Im surprised 1/500 would be fast enough but its just there but have a little movement on the legs - Did you have to do a few test shots to get this right ??

Thanks Ian. I have a 'few' that didn't work this well!! I was trying different settings as I wanted some movement but as I hadn't attempted to photograph a racehorse before it was trial and error. Also only my second visit to a racecourse and the first time here so wasn't sure what could be achieved.

Great shot Andrew, shame about the fence but nothing you can do at least you can see all the heads above it.

If you go again keep trying with the slower shutter speeds as it does give a real sense of speed and power to the horses it's not easy but worth the trial and error

Super shot there Andrew. It has a real sense of energy and urgency about it. The look on the leading horses face is great.

I suppose like motorsport that panning would work?

Excellent shot, Andrew, well judged shutter speed, and a bonus flailing whip (ooo-er missus).

Thanks Paul. I would certainly be tempted to go again but with only 7 races and the horses only coming past once there isn't much time for adjustments!

Thanks Alan. There is some panning going on as you can just see from the fencing. The challenge is the jockeys are moving up and down, back and forward as well as the horses, but its something to try next time.

Thanks Alex. Not sure you would have wanted to get in the way of one of the whips
