Captain Cooks Fell Race New Years Day 2024

I had a run (in the car) to Great Ayton on New Years Day (NYD) to capture a few images on a nice bright day (we've not had many here recently). I was surprised at the amount of cars that were parked around the village. I had expected it to be rather quiet on a NYD morning. Then I realised why there was so many cars parked, they bellonged to the hardy souls who were taking part in a Fell Race.

    1. The participants were a trifle muddy, trying to wash off the mud in the river!

    2. Hardy souls that water was cold!

    3. This runner must have decided he didnt like river water to bathe in so he opted for a puddle.

Not for me either - and I also like to keep dry. Good captures of the event though.

Hi Bill, no we didn't have an ice cream from Suggitts, I was quite surprised that it and a number of the other cafes in the village were open for business on New Year's Day. But maybe I don't get out enough

Thanks Ian, I'm of the same mind as you. The competitors were from various local running clubs. The ones we spoke to all seemed to have enjoyed the Fell Run, getting their New Year off with a bang. Whilst talking with one of them I noticed his registration number had the title Dave Parry Series on it. I was taken aback as Dave was my next door neighbour when we were younger, sadly he died in 2016 far too young, there's some more information about the fell races in this LINK for those who may be interested.
