    Dakota Flight Test

    Hi All,

The BBMF Dakota DC3 has started it's series of Flight Tests following Winter Maintenance.

This Aircraft gets quite a lot of use as not only does it do it's own series of Displays throughout the Season it is also used to train the new Lancaster Bomber Pilots.

    Pic's taken with 7D and 70-200mm F2.8L ll, 1.4 extender, ISO200, 1/180Sec .

      Amazing set.

Exposure, composition, light and prop blur are all superb.

The Dakota/DC-3/C-47 is if I had to choose a favourite radial engined classic - it is it (recall them in service, along with it's somewhat similar Curtis C-46). I built an Airfix kit in the 50's if I recall.

Superb photos ... everything just right ... glad the old lady is still performing.

          Re: Dakota Flight Test

Thanks Tom, Colin and MX for your kind comments.

I must admit I was pleased with the light and colour, but was not too happy with the sharpness, particularly of the close up, the writing shows it up a bit, I think 1/180th is a bit too slow for me to handhold properley whilst stood on step ladders!!!
I have found that 1/250th will give good prop blur generally but when they are throttled back coming in to land, 250 is a fraction too fast.

          Regards Paul

            Re: Dakota Flight Test

Very clear images. I have to admit that my first commercial flight as a child was in a Dakota - I think it took about 5 or 6 hours to fly from Blackbushe to Zurich, or maybe it was Basle!! I remember it being very bumpy at times and quite cold too!

Thanks Diana and Di for having a look and commenting.

Diana, I can imagine, the DC3 is not known for it's passenger comfort.

                  Nice set Paul.
I like how on the last one the man is saluting you in the door way, must be for you balancing on the step ladders

Thanks for looking Chris, the Guy in the back door is probably laughing, me balancing on Stepladders is not a Pretty Sight!!! and from above, the Sun Shining on the Baldspot was probably dazzling the Pilot.

                      Re: Dakota Flight Test

Apart from the slight softness you mentioned everything is captured well, colour, detail and the prop blur

you must be quite old then
