    Fluffy Raptor!

    Hi All,

How fluffy do you like your F-22 Raptor? Fantastic display at RAF Fairford on Thursday. A small shower meant there was a lot of damp in the air - that means lots of vapour.

Like the images very much though for personal preference would have liked a bit more space round the aircraft.

I love the first one, it has a presence to it.

On the second one I cannot decide , was he doing a "Cobra" or was he climbing? the boundary layer breakaway would indicate a "Cobra" or high angle of dangle slow pass, in which case the direction of travel was left to right, which is why I take it is why there is no space left above the aircraft for it to move into, as the image is placed to give the viewer a sense of the aircraft direction and the manoeuvre he was undertaking.

                    Hi All,

                    Thanks for the comments.

Tony, The F-22 was doing a slow high angle of attack pass and this picture was taken about a second after the pilot light the big candles - afterburners - and sent the Raptor into a high speed climb. If you look closely at the back end you can just see the heat rings.

One thing I would add - the 1DX ii is superb and most definitely superior to the original. The light conditions were dire, when I took these pictures! So, if anyone is thinking about changing to a Mk ii, I can assure you it's worth it.

                    Cheers,
                    Neil

Thought so, the heat rings are called diamonds and are shock waves formed in the reheat, a healthy reheat has 9 of them in total and will extend up into the jet pipe, hence why the Reds probably called the diamond 9 formation.
We used to count them as a sign of the health of the reheat. A fact not a lot know BTW is a jet engine can only run subsonic, therefore when you see a supersonic fighter, the engine is actually running subsonic.

Standing beside a Jaguar at full reheat was spectacular, we used to get a fault that was called a pop surge, the reheat would flame out then instantly relight the fuel in the pipe like a car backfiring, except standing about 3- 4 feet from it, the Sqn site would light up and there would be an almighty explosion as it expelled a mass of burning fuel from the jet pipe..... another thing we had to do was to stand slightly to one side and behind the Jag and peer into the jet pipe when in reheat to see if it was burning evenly.

Nice pictures BTW and thanks for telling me the 1DX2 handles poor light better then mine...

                        Hi Tony,

Great information - love it - thanks.

I have been very close to and English Electric Lightning at Bruntingthorpe (not one of their Cold War Jet days) when they've run up the engines to max power. Awesome sensation even with good quality ear defenders. "Did the ground move for you, darling?"

As for the 1DX ii - fabulous piece of kit. I still use the original 1DX, as well. It's a bit like comparing the 1D iv with a 1DX - that's the sort of gap. There are some new features which I'm still playing with, but basically set it up with the 1DX settings and away you go. As for crappy sky, the Mk ii does handle that even better - as you'd hope. One thing I would mention, which I'm not too happy about - it won't take 2 CF cards. The second slot is for the CFast card. Canon have an offer on which I believe ends in October (I could be wrong, though). If you purchase a 1DX ii before October, then Canon will give you a 64Gb CFast card and reader.

                        Cheers,
                        Neil

Well I think I will pass, as tempting as they are I'm trying to get myself a used ef 500 or ef 400 2.8, there my priority purchases at the moment. I tend to use 2 fast 32mb cf cards in mine btw.
I should really also sell my mk1 100-400 but I cannot ever get around to it.

                          Ps
I would be working on the engines when in reheat lol.

Tony, I can highly recommend the 500mil - love mine and it's very good in poor light - as are all the Mk ii lenses in my opinion.

I flogged my old 100-400 with the 1D iv. That was the first L lens I ever bought. In away I was sad to see it go, but................

Here's one just for you Tony. I took it a few weeks ago. 904 hadn't been started up for over 8 months and having fitted the upper engine the LPG guys towed her out. However, minor problem with the new engine and they decided to fire up the lower engine and do a systems check.
