Watched the Mumbles lifeboat being taken back into its new lifeboat house at the end of the Pier in Swansea Bay.
First, brave chaps go to the bottom of the ramp to erect a rod with a "catch rope" for the boat to pick up -
The boat backs up close to the hoop on the end of the rod -
The light rope on the hook is picked up and then used to drag the heavy tow-ropes on board -
The boat is then dragged up the slip with the heavy ropes -
And before it enters its shed the mops and sponges come out and every bit of it gets a wash -
When it goes back into the shed the top bit of the ramp swivels and tilts so that the boat is horizontal, making it easier for maintenance.
Very slick operation - interesting to watch. Would now like to watch a launch - it's doing about 30mph apparently by the time it hits the water at the end of the ramp.
7D + 24-105L.
Cheers, Chris.
