The cross is something of a feature of variable ND's, it's to do with the interaction of the two circular polarisers and the quarter-wave plate, but only really manifests itself when nearing maximum darkness.
If you use a standard ND then using live-view you can usually get a decent representation of the image composition so long as you turn exposure simulation off, unless it's dark (EV8 or so) the image should be more than usable (if a little noisy)
