          Re: My leg fell off...

I recently bought the Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 - 3 leg section, carbon from Parks. Centre column is great, as it is folds over to 90deg, so is horizontal, which with extra splayed out legs - also to 90deg!) puts your camera as close to the ground as you could want.
175cm highest, supports up to 8kg, weighs 1.65kg.

I'm not tall (5 foot 8), but a taller tripod means that on a sloping hill say, I can still have room to manouver it to my liking. My last tripod broke BECAUSE it was a twist fitting... my daughter thought she was twisting it to lock, but un-twisted until she got the same result you did! We never did find all the bits that fell out! I'm therefore very happy with the CLICK lock - one handed, simple, would def recommend.

I've paired it with a Manfrotto 496RC2 ballhead, which is a great little head, with friction control.

I'll look for a case for it too, but so far, it's not got damaged without it, but then I haven't had it too long either!

          Hope that helps!

          Mike

Some sound advice here Paul, I have a 15 year old Manfrotto Carbon Fibre tripod, and it's stood the test of time, been bounced around the Dales/Scotland/Wales and still comes up trumps. The advantage I find with carbon fibre (among many) is that it's not as cold to the touch as metal tripods, important when it's below freezing.
Along with recommendations made previously, look for one with dual purpose feet (spike & rubber), a hook on the end of the centre column is useful also.

Just as important is the tripod head, and although most folk have their own preference in type of head, it's worth investing in 2 heads, I have a small manfrotto ball head for general walking, used with standard lenses (the ball head doubles up on my monopod also), and a heavy duty ball head when shooting with big lenses.

Whatever you chose, get the best you can afford, if you do it should last many a year of good service.

I don't want much of course lol. I was looking at the Manfrotto 055XPROB because it's quite commonly used and only 2.4kg but that might still be too heavy
                320kg???

You must have a strong arm to lift that out of the boot.....!

                Sorry

Not true - all RRS tripods are designed AND made in the USA.
