    Hood on wide angle lens?

Is it wise to put on a wide angle lens a hood? Or are there special wide angel lens hoods?
    With kind regards,

depends if its sunny and bright and you may get a lens flair - Its best to use the hood provided by the manufacture

plus you also offer additional protection to the lens should you drop it - a friend of mine recently did this and the hood saved his lens

Yes, I know. Thank for the answer. I want it to know for sure, because I have read somewhere, that if you put a hood on a wide angle lens you get dark borders around photo. But perhaps that is a fairy tale?

thats the reason I said the correct hood or manufactures one, if the wrong hood is used you could get dark edges especially when very wide

Friso, I don't know the wide angle lens you have got but I find it better to remove the hood completely when you are taking pictures at the widest aperture of your lens. This will prevent the dark corners you mention which is called as "vignetting"! With your DSLR you can actually see the dark corners when you open up your lens and this should tell you either to "close down"(increase the aperture) or to remove the lenshood.

That's not true all the time Nat. With my 10-24 and the hood that came with it I see no sign of vignetting.

That is quite true Andy but there are times when vignetting occurs. I did own a Sigma 10-20mm lens at one time and I found that this was the case. Not very often I agree but there were times I had to remove the bespoke lenshood which came with the lens.

I have got the Sigma 15-30mm lens and I do have a problem on and off. I find that I have to remove the hood if I am taking pics at 15mm.

what I've found Nat is that when your wide you have to rotate the hood to make sure vignetting isn't happening - this can either be done when putting the hood on, or if you find your going wide

I don't wish to hijack Friso's thread but is there a specific mark on lenshoods to help people like me? Still learning the ropes Ian.

Re: Hood on wide angle lens?

I think this has been said already, but if the correct lens hood is attached to your lens correctly, then the hood has no impact whatsoever on vignetting, including with WA/UWA lenses.
What WILL increase or precipitate vignetting is shooting your lens (and it also depends on the specific lens, to make life more complicated!) wide open at it's widest aperture, which is made worse using a FF body. This has to do with diffraction, and the inability of the lens to form a large uniform 'circle' that can cover the sensor, which is why this phenomenon is more common with FF bodies. It's also more common with cheaper lenses that aren't really performing at their best wide-open.
So Fr1so, as long as you use the correct hood for the lens, it will not influence vignetting.

I think you have hit the nail on the head Kelly. Yes, it seems my problem is only when using my WA lens with my FF 6D.

Certainly the OEM hood shouldn't cause any problems, not seen any issues with my Sigma 10-20 f3.5 on my 60D.

Also if there is a profile in LR then some correction of vignetting will be applied on import.

not unless I've missed something here Ant, that would only apply if a lens issue, not due to hood vignetting problem, not that I've experienced this
