    Memory Cards

Speed of memory cards is a much discussed topic but not really what my question is about.

Off to Yellowstone next year and thinking about the number of images I'll probably take and backup.

Very unlikely I'll be able to take a laptop so way forward seems to be a number of memory cards. My thinking is to save RAW files to both the CF and SD cards for security.

On the 5D3 a 32GB card can store about 1000 images, presumably similar for 7D2. As the trip is to shot wildlife I'll definitely take loads of images so thinking 64GB cards are going to be useful.

So the question is is anyone using 64GB cards and would like to comment. I know about the nervousness of large cards and failure but I think it's something to live with.

Oh, an additional question anyone using 1066x CF with the 5D3? Seems to be conflicting info about whether theses work or not.

    Re: Memory Cards

Are you staying at a hotel with wifi would be my first thought? I can't be of much help other than that. I use sandisk cards, from reputable suppliers. Lots of knock offs out there. Never gone bigger than 32bg, both sd and cf. Never had any issues. Memory is cheap, so stock up on smaller cards would be my next thought, just in case one does give up on you.

Don't know if this helps in any way!

PS I am jealous! Yellowstone definitely on my bucket list

      Re: Memory Cards

Over the years, I gradually increased the size of the cards I purchased and eventually settled on 16 being a reasonable balance of capacity, price and risk. Earlier this year I bought my first pair of 64s and last month bought a pair of 128s.

      My strategy:

Never buy the largest available capacity - always step down one or two sizes
Always buy a tier one brand - I use SanDisk but Lexar and others are equally good of course
Generally buy direct from Amazon - never from an Amazon seller
Always write images to both cards
Always format in camera rather than in computer

In 10+ years I've only had one corrupt card - a 4GB SanDisk CF towards the end of a fantastic day at RIAT - that was definitely soul destroying.

These days, biggest risk is probably physical loss through theft or other incident. Thus don't carry all your filled cards back in a single container.

Yellowstone should be a fantastic trip!

Thanks for input. Never had a corrupt card myself.

There is a slight cost advantage buying bigger cards, a 64GB will be about 10-15% cheaper than buying two 32GB but not really an issue.

Thinking 4x 64GB with existing 2x 32GB (along with equivalent number of SD for backup) will give me about 9000 images per body. Hopefully that will be enough.

I have a couple of 64gb cards, luckily never had an issue, 128gb is great if you video, I don't...

Have fun processing all of those. And we'll see you again in 2019!

High speed CF cards will be fine (especially on their own) - however, the the 5D3's SD slot is the limiting factor (writes at 150x I believe)

Apologies for possibly stating the obvious, but given that you're clearly thinking and planning ahead, the number of batteries (and chargers) is perhaps something else to think about ... sounds like you may be looking at a couple of batteries per body per day, maybe even more if extended use of AF / IS / LV ...

Yes was something I have in hand. The batteries I have for the 5D3 are getting towards the end of their life so good time to get some new ones.

Yep is a known factor with 5D3. Interestingly from what I read in the past the problem was worse when writing JPEG to the SD. Saving RAW to both CF and SD not as bad.

I've shot fast action with the 5D at super league games using both slots, 1 full Raw for mags the other small Raw files for internet and can't say i noticed any problems with slow down, it probably does but not that slow it becomes a problem to worry about?

On another note I have a spare battery if you need to borrow one or need to buy another one I'll sell it cheap.

Anyone used 7DayShop for mem cards? Seem competitive and offer small discount for multiple purchase.
