    Log off or shut down?

I have in the past put my computer into it's "sleep" mode whenever I had intentions of coming back to it. But I have found that latterly I had difficulty in "waking up"/re-starting the computer from the sleep mode- very often it did not start up and I had to then manually shut down and re-start the machine. I have since learnt from one or two other members that they too have had this problem. So I now either shut down or log off even though I intend coming back to my computer when I had further work to do i.e write letters, check my e-mails,or process photographs. I would like to know what the majority of members do when they have finished with working with their computer but intend getting back to it the same day.

    Many thanks for your advice.

I had similar issues when using a PC as I never turn mine off - since moving to a Mac I never have problems and I can put it to sleep and wake it faster than my old eyeballs will focus on the screen

I never put my pc to sleep because of the problems waking it up. I changed all the power settings to never.

Now my Pc is on till I go to bed or I am done with it for the day and I also turn off the screen if I go out

I just leave mine to go into standby mode, a quick mouse click or keyboard press wakes it up (usually).

Cant see why you would want to bother to log off or shut down unless you are living with someone you cant trust or have "things" on your hard drive you wouldn't want anyone else to see ( a couple of for that last point)

With the MacBook, I shut it down - the batteries are getting old now and if it goes to sleep over the weekend, I find it hibernates anyway (I use Insomnia to monitor battery performance and control sleep / hibernation state). I find it's as quick to power back up from cold as it is to start from hibernation.

The iMac simply turns the screen off, but once again, I shut down at the end of the day.
