Screen broken on 40D. How to repair?

I got my 40D out of the camera bag today and found that somehow something had cracked the screen.

Luckily it is just the outer glass and not the LCD, which still works perfectly.

Does anyone know if this is a DIY repair? I can't really afford to be without my camera whilst I send it off to Canon Spain for repair. A friends was away for 10 weeks with them just to fit a new memory card connector after he bent a CF pin.

If not I will live with it until I can afford for it to be away for a while.

Never done it myself but I believe you can get a replacement cover from Canon to fit yourself.

Most people have a back up body for use in cases like this. I have a 300D to back up my 7D, talk about chalk and cheese. You could try picking up a cheap EOS digital camera to get you out of trouble while the 40D is away and keep it as a backup after the problem is dealt with. I can't think of a DIY repair for the screen.

I know the stable door has opened and the horses long gone. But ...

I use Camera Armour on my 40D to protect it ... this brand appears to have gone and been replaced by Delkin Snug-It Pro Skin (snappy name!) ... in the UK even Argos sell it Snug-IT for 40D at Argos so it should be widely available beyond these shores.

My recently acquired 40D came with a Giottos http://www.giottos.com/ glass screen protector fitted, have to say I am pretty impressed with it. If you check the web site, click the link SP under protectors. It may be that this will be useful temporary fix.

Oggie, thanks for that link too.

A quick update I tried the firm in the link from Foggy's post. but they were waiting for stock plus they wanted £9.99 to mail to Spain. Ended up ordering from Canon Spain as again no stock but would only take a couple of days for them to get from Canon Germany (main European stockists of spares?) to get and only €12 & p&p.

Good to hear progress is being made Colin .

Let us know how you get on with the repair .
I only skim read the tutorial , but I can imagine that the old screen will require some persuasion to get out , and it probably best to try to lift one corner first and work from there .
If you need to use anything to "pry" the old window out , the best tool for this job I have found is a guitar plectrum , these are hard enough to do the job , but soft enough to not damage the case of camera .
Also if any of the double sided adhesive tape is left behind , use a cotton bud dipped in either meths of possibly IPA to remove all of it , before placing the new window .

This may help, although it is actually designed as a screen cover. I boufgt from them for my Pentax. It took about 10 days to arrived, but fitted nicely and is still good two years later.
