    Need some advice, 60D / 650D / 700D - decisions, decisions, decisions

    Hello all,

Looking for some advice - and this forum is great for that.

I currently have a 450D with the 18-55 / 55-250 kit. Love the camera, but it's time to upgrade. I'm tossing up between the 650D / 60D / 700D (I've listed them from cheapest to most expensive in Australia).

I'm thinking the 60D, but was wondering if the 700D is a better camera now?

Next month I'm going overseas (hence the upgrade now). I'm tryng to avoid taking the two lenses; call me lazy, but I just find the continual swapping over a little tiresome when travelling for 7 weeks. (Plus the majority of my travel photos are in the focal range of 20 - 160 mm).

As much as I'd love to get the 24-105 L, I can't get my budget to stretch that far; it's not an option.

I'm looking at two lenses; either the 18-135 STM or the 18-200. I doubt I will take much video; but you never know - so the STM aspect isn't the deal clincher as such.

Anyone like to make a suggestion on the body / lens combo. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

    Michael
    Cheers!

Michael, there is very little difference between the 650D and the 700D.
Both the 650D and 700D have the Digic5 processor whilst the 60D has the Digic4.
If an upgrade is on the cards then I suggest the less expensive 650D with the articulated touch screen.
It is of a similar weight and size of your 450D whilst the 60D is much heavier.

I agree with Stephen. If the ergonomics of a camera are an issue then a 60D might suit, but the 650D will yield a better result in IQ, and noise performance. I know a guy who sold his 60D for a 650D and never looked back.

On the lens front I'd suggest also looking at the 15-85 as it should do 95% of what you need and give you a significantly wider view. It depends how much you really want the extra magnification at the long end.

Body-wise I guess the 700D (which is basically a 600D with a couple of fixes rather than any major advance) unless you get lucky and a 70D pops up very soon, but if it does it probably will come in at a price premium anyway.

I have just bought the 700D, not as an upgrade, but as a first body, and I can tell you it is a great little camera. Also, the lens that comes with it, the 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM, is a great lens.
          Cheers,
          Brian.

The two lenses you are looking at will be a disappointment. Yes they are convenient, but that's all they have going for them. To have such a large zoom range, too many compromises have to be made with the design and construction.

The 55 - 250mm is a little gem, perhaps trade the 18 - 55mm for the IS version, or go for the even better 15 - 85mm.

I looked at both the 650D and the 60D when making a choice.

Whilst the 650D was a nice camera, in my hands it was far too small.

I'd also agree with Brian, of the kit lenses the 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM is probably the best (err, excluding kits with the 24-105 L that is), although not the smallest. I'd still suggest looking at the 15-85 though, having a wide end can be useful.
