    5D III Questions

Q1: How do I get the AF point selection button to show the sensors and beep when focus is achieved at a particular point? At present when I use the button I get SEL and an option of AF or Brackets.
Q2: If I use HDR Mode and set it to "Continuous HDR every shot" does the HDR work with a single image or do I still have to take multiple images (say on a tripod) and merge them?
Thanks in advance for your advice,
    Regards,
    Neville

      Re: 5D III Questions

Thanks ST-EOS, Focus Beep is enabled.
      That is not the problem.
I think I have to disable the SEL (whatever that means) to enable the focus points to show when I press the AF point selection button.

        Re: 5D III Questions

Neville the HDR takes three images (standard/ under/over exposures) then merged automatically in camera. You can choose the desired dynamic range for the three images and also the desired effect "vivid, bold etc. page 173 of the handbook explains it all.

          Thanks Peter,
That has sorted my HDR issue as I previously thought it had to be done with computer software (in-camera is great stuff).
Can you offer any advice on the focus point issue ie what does the SEL mean and how do I disable it?
          Regards,

Neville are you looking at the LCD panel on the top of the 5D when trying to select the focus point/s or through the viewfinder ?

              Re: 5D III Questions

When looking through the viewfinder and press the AF "SEL"ection point button on the rear of camera (top Right handside) you can then select the focus point by using the"M-Fn" button (it sits between the shutter button and the main dial on top of the camera each press of the M-Fn button toggles through the focus points available to you. The points available are linked to the lens you have mounted on the camera. IHTH

                Re: 5D III Questions

                Thanks Mate,
That all works but it's extra buttons and dials to operate.
I used to just press the AF point selection button then dial with the top dial.
This was much simpler but I cant get it to operate now, and the beep still does not work so I can't confirm focus.
                Regards,

                  Re: 5D III Questions

                  Neville Please excuse me if I'm teaching my Granny to suck eggs here;
If you are looking through the viewfinder when you press the AF-On button (rear RHS at top of camera, left button of the three) and the camera gets focus you will see the indicator (a Green Dot) at the extreme right of the viewfinder display. By the way I suspect that somehow your audible confirmation is switched off in one of the menu options either that or the camera has a fault. It may be worth trying a reset of the camera settings which you can do via the "Set UP4" menu.
I see from one of your other posts that you are travelling, if you don't have your camera manual with you, you can download a PDF of it via this post LINK which is kindly kept up to date by Stephen Hereford_EOS

                    Re: 5D III Questions

                    I have it half sorted.
I had the AF Drive set on AI Servo which wont lock on a focal point.
I have now changed it to One Shot and that has the beep happening again.
However I still can't disable the SEL!

                      Re: 5D III Questions

Glad you're getting there Neville. Oh and welcome to the forum .

I'm sure someone with a little more experience with the 5D11 than me may be along to give you some pointers as to the SEL issue, if I'm honest I dont understand what your issue is.

However this is my interpretation of what you mean

for this my narative relates to what you see through the viewfinder with the camera switched on and active (half press the shutter release)

                      1. The AF Point that is currently selected will show i.e. a black squres or multiplies of squares.
                      2. Press AF-ON and the currentley selected AF point which achieves focus turns red briefly and my camera beeps.
                      3. Press the shutter button and you should have an in focus image.

However when you look through the viewfinder and press the focus point selection button you will see the focus points in red that are available to you; you can then select which focus point or group of points you wish to use by using the Multicontroller switch (it's the one between the "Q" and start/stop buttons. The multicontroller works like a joystick, note that if you depress (i.e. straight in) it it takes you to the center point AF.

Lets know how you get on

                        Re: 5D III Questions

I'm quite new to the 5D3 and some settings still confuse me, but try this:-

                        • Press Menu button
                        • Move to the AF section and go to the 4th page
                        • Scroll down to 'AF area selection method'
                        • Press your SET button and select the top option 'M-Fn-button'
                        • Press SET button

If that doesn't work for you, move across to the Spanner icon in the menu and select 'Clear all camera settings', that'll reset your camera to default.

                          Re: 5D III Questions

                          G'day AndyA,
Mate, it was already set on M-Fn however I changed it, tried it, then changed it back and still have SEL showing.
The clear camera settings is my last resort and I may have to use it however every little problem I solve gives me a greater understanding of the camera's tools and capabilities.
                          Regards,
                          Neville
