Remote triggering systems

I read about PocketWizards, Skyport, RadioPopper (?) etc. Since getting my 7D which can remotely control my 580EX I've become interested in remote triggering ...

If you use this technology please will you share your thoughts. Things like what you need to get started without spending a fortune, how it works in real life, etc.

Thanks for the reply.

Two things immediately spring to mind.

a) Remotely taking photographs and
b) Remotely controlling a slave flash (okay I know my 7D can 'talk' to my 580EX)

But both of these around corners as well as line of sight. Which I guess means radio rather than light/IR devices.
