    dead EOS 550D

While I was taking pictures, my 550D suddenly started to make a horrible high pitched whining noise, which continued even when switched off. It only stopped when I removed the battery. i tried a different fully-charged battery but it was completely dead.

Has anyone had a similar fault or any idea what might cause this and if it's repairable? I suspect it might be fairly serious and don't want to go to the trouble and expense of sending it to Canon if its not economical to repair. Rather disappointing in a camera that's less than 2 years old.

I've no experience with stuff like this, but is it still dead/whining, with the lens off?

Remove the lens and then re-insert the battery, switch on and see if it works ok

Thanks for the suggestion, it hadn't occurred to me the lens might be causing the problem. Unfortunately removing the lens doesn't help. It stopped whining when I took the battery out and since then has shown no sign of life (I've tried both my batteries and now several lenses)
