Some may know I've been going on about the 1D mkiii of late, and with good reason. It looks fantastic, but I've been trying to iron out what frustrates me about the 7D, so that I have a solid reason in my head to switch.
I want to know that it's just not me that is either getting this wrong or it's just the camera.
AF Tracking in AI Servo in a burst run
C.Fn III:1 - AI Servo Sensitivity - Set to halfway between Slow and middle
C.Fn III:2 - 0:AF priority/Track priority (It'll focus first then focus for every shot in burst after that)
C.Fn III:3 - 1: Continuous AF track priority
Now, if my understanding is correct with theses settings, if i lock onto a moving subject it will focus on the subject on the first shot and subsequent shots. The knock on effect will be the decrease in burst rate.
Also if anything comes into the scene, the continuous AF track priority will ignore this, and coupled with AI Servo Sensitivity probably won't even get to see it.
I have been trialling this for a few days now and I'm lucky if I get 1 or 2 shots in a 10-20 shot burst run.
One thing of note is that I don't use Zone AF. I turned it off on the advice of another wildlife photographer, saying to stick to Single Point AF and keep the subject in the middle.
I tried this last night and got my GF to walk towards me from the kitchen to the living room on a 45 degree angle away from me using Zone AF. It was a little better with 3-4 in focus, however the conflicting advice not to use Zone AF has me concerned.
What's everyone doing? I can't truly discount the 7D until I've tried everything, and the evidence of this working is everywhere, and I'm guessing it's my lack of understanding of how this works rather than the camera. Going to a 1D mkiii is not going to solve this issue for me, if that's the case.
Cheers for the help,
Paul
