hi all how do i find out how many shots have been taken with my camera its a 400d

I am not sure that you or I can. Camera dealerships have some software available that can interrogate the camera and determine a shutter count, but we can only do it with a 1 series camera.

Do other members know if similar software is available for us to use?

I seem to recall there is something 'hidden' in the manufacturer information part of the EXIF. I once looked at this on my 300d ... and it matched with the Image numbering (as I had neither reset the image numbering or done a factory reset) ... must do some digging for the maths that lets you work it out ...

For some Digic III/IV (except the 1-series) try Actuation Count ... but this doesn't answer the posters question.
