    EOS 70D - Focus - what's your experience?

I'd always intended to replace my 40D with the 70D but had been put off by the numerous complaints on the internet about focus issues using the central focus point particularly with fast lenses (just google 70d focus issues).

I've even queried this with Canon who responded saying:

"Your enquiry concerning the functionality of the Canon EOS 70D has been forwarded to our product specialist team, who will investigate further. Please be aware that you will be contacted regarding this within 3-6 working days"

So currently waiting to hear from them.

However, don't see any complaints on here & I guess there must be plenty of 70D owners, so what's your experience ?

    just google 70d focus issues
Just Google anything Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax and there will be loads of negatives.
People always post negatives and hardly ever the positives.
    I love my 70D.
    Focusing issues? What issues?

I checked this out as I've had a bit of a problem sometimes and the discussion on DP Review suggests that doing a micro focus adjustment will correct any error. I shall give it a try.

        Re: EOS 70D - Focus - what's your experience?

I emailed Canon UK Customer support & this is what they had to say:

        Dear Mr ********,

Thank you for your request and for contacting Canon regarding reports of focusing problems with the EOS 70D. I appreciate that there are many reports of this on the internet, however this is the first time that the UK helpdesk has been contacted directly about this, and so I would like to thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Further to my e-mail last week, I would like to assure you that this topic has now been escalated to Canon Inc in Japan.

I hope you can appreciate that this will require further technical investigation and therefore I apologise that I am unable to advise how soon I will receive any further news on this, however I hope it is of assurance to you that we are giving this the required attention.

Please be assured that I will relay any updates to you as and when I receive further information..

        Yours sincerely,

Looks like Canon at least recognise that there are lots of people that do have issues. Will be interesting to see what the outcome is.

Had my 70D since it's release date and this is the first I was aware of any focussing issues. In fact one of the best features for me with the 70d is the focussing (dual pixel technology). Wasn't that one of the key selling points?

I think the internet works like this. People who have no problems don't post. People who do have problems do post. People who are rubbish and it's all their fault post a lot because it's obviously the camera's fault...

I'd agree with at least the first two points but reading the complaints on various forums and the extent of testing some owners have done to establish the conditions under which the focus problems occur shows they are far from 'rubbish', on the contrary they seem to be very knowledgeable.

There are just too many reports worldwide describing the same scenario for there not to be some substance to the problem; the fact that not every 70D owner has had them suggests that hopefully only some units are effected. Most people report the problem only occurs with fast (F2.8 or faster) lenses so there is the possibility that owners without such lenses will never notice or have the problem.
