Canon Camera Body Spec - Few Questions

    1Ds Mk3 (21.1MP/36×24 CMOS) 5616×3744 max image size=18.72″ x 12.48″ max print size @300
    5D Mk2 (21.1MP/36x24 CMOS) 5616×3744 max image size=18.72″ x 12.48″ max print size @300
    1D Mk4 (16.1MP/27.9×18.6 CMOS) 4896×3264 max image size=16.32″ x 10.88″ max print size @300
    7D (18MP/22.3×14.9 CMOS) 5184×3456 max image size=17.28″x11.52″ max print size @300
    550D (18MP/22.3×14.9 CMOS) 5184×3456 max image size =17.28″x11.52″ max print size @300
    50D (15.1MP/22.3×14.9 CMOS) 4752×3168 max image size=15.84″x10.56″ max print size @300
    500D (15.1MP/22.3×14.9 CMOS) 4752×3168 max image size=15.84″x10.56″ max print size @300
    450D (12.2MP/22.2×14.8 CMOS) 4272×2848 max image size=14.24″x9.49″ max print size @300
    1000D (10.1MP/22.2×14.8 CMOS) 3888×2592 max image size=12.96″x8.64″ max print size @300

Would it be right to assume that those bodies that use the same sensors would yield the same image quality and that the difference in price is down to additional features such as more frames per second, and whilst one may never want to print any larger than 12x8, a print taken from the 1000D sensor will look inferier to a 12x8 print taken from the 1Ds Mk3 sensor because this sensor renders a 'better' quality image?

    The 5D Mk2 is a 36x24 sensor!!

The 1DS and the 5D Mk1/2 are full frame
      The 1D Mk4 is a 1.3 crop - EF-C
      The rest are 1.6 crop - EF-S

The sensor size for these 3 types are different

Even within the same sensor size the sensor are different so direct comparisons are difficult

The biggest variables in the picture quality are

      - the human taking the picture
      - the human doing the post processing
      - the lens

Agree with all that, but that doesn't really answer my question.

Can a 22.2x14.8 sensor produce a 12 x 8 print comparable in quality to a 36x24 sensor if the same lens (say a 50 1.2L), was used for the same shot, with settings that both comeras were able to offer.

That depends very much on the settings - particularly ISO

In ideal conditions - say for ISO 100 then probably on a print differnces would be very small - especially is PP is done

If you are talking of ISO 1600 then there will be differences, not only relating to the size but also the design (age possibly age related)

So one sensor is available in a camera costing £329 the other sensor in a camera costing £1689 (5x). Granted the 5Mk2 has LOTS of additional features but can produce only a slightly larger print at 300 18x12 (18.72x12.48) compared with around 12x8 (12.96x8.64). The lenses for both these cameras cost the same and wedding photographers for example would rarely need to print larger than 12x8 so why would it be frowned on by other 'professionals' if a 1000D was used to cover a wedding despite having L glass stuck on the front and coverage could be provided without going beyond ISO640? Does the 22.2x14.8 sensor really start to fall down beyond 100ISO? At what ISO would the larger sensor start to out perform the smaller one?

By the way, I use the 5DMk2 but Iam starting to wonder why I spent all that money on the body when I will never print beyond 12x8 and rarely go beyond ISO1000. Maybe I should hire a 1000D and run some tests? Have any been done already?

I would suggest that it is easier to get an 12x8 print out of 21mp than 10 - by the time you have done cropping.

There are other things in the camera other than the sensor. Perhaps that is where the money is going? Perhaps you need to compare relative functions.

At the end of the day it is your choice - I have a 50d and 5d MK1 to do different jobs. The 5D is MUCH better in low light and taking portraits than the 50d. The 50d is better for action pictures due to the higher fps and the 1.6 crop giving a higher effective focal length for a lens over the full frame version.

I think ISO 800 may be pushing it on a 1000d.
