    New Review of Canon 5Ds & 5DSR

    Hi,
Great review by David Clapp - somebody I know & respect & whose thoughts I would trust more than those highly tech reviews that are not done in the real world of you & I.

Re: New Review of Canon 5Ds & 5DSR

Interesting, although like the others I've read or seen, he is still another Canon "employee" so to speak, so we still have to consider the source, even if he tries to sound objective. The one point that has come out of all the hands on reviews I've read/seen with professionals and fine art photographers, is that this may really be a game changer in terms of being able to provide the detail that previously was limited to medium format. We've become accustomed to the look of large digital prints, so we don't really notice the lack of fine detail until a 35mm-size digital print is alongside a medium format digital print. Is it the physical size of the sensor, or is it the pixels? The next year of actual use may tell the story. Has anyone started a pool on how long before there is a 60MP Sony?

Here's another discussion (video of a live webcast from Monday afternoon) including the fist explanation I've seen of the low pass filter and the cancellation filter, and how they work. I still don't buy the reason they did it this way for the R model, but at least I understand that the cancellation does not degrade image quality. This webcast was sponsored by B&H Photo, which is the biggest camera store in the US. On the panel is a Canon technical rep (no surprise) and a working professional who uses a 5D3, as well as medium format digital and large format cameras. His remarks are pretty interesting. He talks about eyelashes and 3D eyeballs, plus blades of grass and fabric detail, but he hedges quite a bit about which one he would/will use himself.

BTW, I pre ordered the 5DSR (for my wife...I use the 100D, aka Baby Rebel) the day the 5DS/R were announced, and it just shipped on Monday. UPS says it will be here on Thursday. Of course Tropical Storm Bill is due to hit the Texas coast just south of here in a few hours, so UPS may have to come by on pontoons. First 50mp pics may be storm and flood damage. Then I'll photograph all my suits and fabric jackets to check for moire.
