I'm curious about the volume of the shutter click when you take a picture. For those who have both cropped and FF cameras, is the click louder on cropped sensors?

Re: Shutter sound?
Thought it may have been the lens but it's not. Can't remember if it was that loud when I got it (500d) probably was. I heard someone getting a 1000d and that was quieter, also at a canon course all had FF and they were quieter more pleasing type of click. I know my hearing is quite particular to some sounds maybe I'm becoming over sensitive, more self conscious in quieter public areas when I click at a higher pitch.

Re: Shutter sound?
I have just upgraded from a 350D to a 60D and it is noticeable that the noise produced by the 60D when taking a picture is of a much lower tone and 'softer' than the 350D (which, to my mind, was the classic metallic click sound). I take the point about camera construction materials potentially influencing audible noises but I also wondered if the mechanism which permits Live View & HD video to be shot has an intrinsic quality that is responsible for my noticing this apparent difference ?

Re: Shutter sound?
The 1D iv has a lovely sound - quite a few people have asked what camera I'm using, because it sounds so good.

Re: Shutter sound?
I recently used a 5D II for the first time and that seemed to make a fair old 'thunk' compared with my 7D. I suspect that's just because it was different rather than louder so I was a little sensitive to it.
When I use the 400D that just seems a little... wheezier.
I do remember when I first went back to (D)SLR after a few years of compacts. I switched off all the bleeps and pings, took a photo and thought 'Oh, I've forgotten to switch off the shutter noise...'Canon EOS7D mkII+BG-E16, Canon EOS 7D+BG-E7, Canon EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-4.5, Tamron Di-II 17-50 f2.8, Canon EF 24-105 f/4L IS, Canon EF 70-200 f/4L, Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC HSM 'Art', Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM, Sigma 1.4x DG, Canon Speedlight 430EX II (x2)

Re: Shutter sound?
I think the sound of the 1 series is orgasmic. I could listen to it all day.
Something I missed when moving to the 7D.
I remember reading that the Nikon pros requested that the shutter sound on their DSLRs replicated the sound of their film cameras.
A couple of years ago I was at the Black Isle photographing Bottlenose Dolphins. There was a lull when there were no Dolphins to be seen.
A nikon tog, tongue in cheek, blamed the white Canon lenses for scaring them off.
Quick as a flash another Canon shooter shouted back "Nah, its the noise of your bl**dy Nikon"

I have been asked if I can "turn off the shutter noise" on the SLR ..... lol

On the 1D-3 (so perhaps on all 1 series bodies) there is a "silent" mode, but this only works on single shot shooting, and although it is significantly quieter than normal shooting, it is not "silent", a better description would be "quiet" mode.Ian,1D-3, 5D-2, 24-70L, 70-200L, 100-400L, ST-E2, 580-EX2, Elinchrom lights: http://www.flickr.com/photos/clik-klik/
