    60D and 550EX Flash

    Help Required

Can a 60D fire a 550EX flash gun by wireless (Radio)?

If so what are the menu setting needed on the camera and switches on the gun?

    Thanks in anticipation

    Re: 60D and 550EX Flash

Not sure about the camera but I guess the gun will need to be in slave mode.

The manual should explain how to trigger the flash in some sort of master mode - I think the pop up flash fires the remote flash.

You cannot contro,l the flash from the camera though like you can with the 580EX II

P 139 of the owners manual.

There seems to be no way to turning off the wireless controller - the popup has to be used the master.

The 550EX is supported as a slave as are all EX series speedlights

          Re: 60D and 550EX Flash

There is a mode that tells the built in flash "not to contribute to the exposure", although it still fires.
Many people who use wireless flash with the pop up report that the pop up flash does effect exposure, even in this mode.

The 550EX is supported as a slave as are all EX series speedlights
I thought until very recently, the 4 series was the cheapest model that supported wireless slavery :-)

Secondhand 580EX are going for about £200 from dealers which makes them about the same as a 430EXII. Makes them good value for money.

The built in flash fires at a very reduced rate when on nctf,I've just bought the 430EX mk2 and used with my 60d withnb very good results.

The built in flash fires straight on and and there are quite a few scenarios where that causes problems.
If you're close to the subject or you're snapping someone in front of a reflective BG, for example.

Someone has gone to the trouble of designing a small shield to help with these problems, I think it costs about 20 quid or so.
The other solution is avoiding situations were it is a problem.

This applies to the 7D as well. I thought I understood that if you have the camera set to wireless off-camera flash only the onboard flash fires before the exposure is taken and doesn't affect the final image.

It's one of those things that you might be better of testing out for yourself, that way you'll be 100% sure

The flash on my 60d can be set up not to fire but give out a very small flash or you can adjust the output of the flash guns being used either way.

Quite right. I thought that was what I found in the test, but I'm doubting myself now, because that's not really what I was testing for! I need to go back and see the results. There was certainly no noticeable flash in the result, but I can't say for sure there wasn't a low power effect. I'll post back tomorrow when I'm more sure.
