    Video Frame rate

When shooting video on my 60d I've tried all the setings .Ie Frame rates ,size etc ,I cant see much in it althought the 720 setting seems as good as the 1080 when viewed on my 1080p 40" Sony Bravia screen.
    Any comments will be welcome.

    Re: Video Frame rate

So the 60D can shoot in a few different ways.

    • 1920x1080p: 30/24 fps (NTSC), 25/24 fps (PAL)
    • 1280x720p (HD): 60 fps (NTSC), 50 fps (PAL)
    • 640x480 (SD): 60 fps (NTSC), 50 fps (PAL)

The faster the frame rate the better the images will look patricularly in fast motion. And with faster frame rates, if you play them back at a normal 30fps or 24fps, you will get excellent slow motion. 24p has a movie like effect - on a dSLR it looks stuunning!

720p is a decent way to shoot HD video - quality is generally very good - 1080p though will have slightly more detail. if watched on 1080p flat panel, the pixels from the 720p movie are larger than those of the 1080p video..... might be slight but there is a difference.

      Re: Video Frame rate

As an aside - NTSC (Never The Same Colour) frame rates are actually reduced by 1000/1001. So 24 is actually 23.976. In case you wondered why this strange fractional numbers crop up.

The is an historic fix when color (sic) came to NTSC and backward compatibility with monochrome was required. I’m sure a technical person could explain the how’s and whys of this.

But 1080p25 and 1080p24 on a Full HD TV will be the best. Unless you have a reason to use 720p. You can always downscale better than you can upscale I imagine.

Does use a chunk more of memory. But as usual higher res should be better
