Sigma 70-300mm APO macro lens

I have just purchased a Sigma 70-300mm 1:4 -5:6 APO macro lens for my EOS 1000D when I put it on the camera it comes up with an error saying "Err 01 Communications between the camera and lens is faulty Clean lens contacts" Does this mean there is a problem with the lens being compatible with the camera. The person I bought it from said this could be a problem but when I checked on-line every post I came across said there shouldn't be a problem. I have cleaned the contacts but to no avail.

Can someone help me please

I would suspect it is the electrical connector between the camera and the lens - so

- if other lens work OK then it isn't the camera
- other people dont have a problem
- my guess is that the previous owner had this problem with this lens

That said cleaning the connections might cure the problem

Have cleaned the connections. I have had a look at other threads re this problem and will contact Sigma on Monday to see if it is an issue that can be resolved by rechipping. Apparently they do it
for free but thanks for the reply.
