Clear out time - Your thoughts?

Going through my camera bags, I have had serious thoughts lately on selling on some of my gear that rarely gets used in favour of gear that would get used.

My current body set up is 1D3, 5D2 and 600D.
The 5D2 and 600D are definate keepers and ideal for what I need from them.
Which leaves the 1D3. I love the feel of it and it sounds and handles great but I only use it for Wildlife such as birds in flight now and again.
With my 300 f4 + 1.4 attached I still need to crop heavily at times. The images are OK (ish)
Having met some wildlife togs and seeing some amazing images here and on other forums using and taken with the 7D, would it be a wise move ditching the 1D3 in favour of the cropped sensor, slightly less fps and higher pixel count of the 7D meaning that I could hopefully crop tighter and still get a good image like I can with the 5D2?

Also on my list to go is my 70-200 f4L non is and Tamron 90mm Macro. Both spend all their time boxed and never see daylight.

    Any views would be welcome

    400 f2.8 + 7D is a great combination - dump the 1d3 +300f4+1.4 combination

I bet it is Brian but unfortunately way out of my price range.
I should have added that I had hoped by selling the 1D3 and 2 lenses I would have more than enough for the 7D + 100L macro.
I really like my 300 f4 and 100-400 and wouldn't went to sell them

      Thanks for the input Brian

The thing is Mike, it's such a wrench letting anything go, isn't it?

          I recently sold my 50D, 5D and 300F4 so I could get the 400F2.8

          Mind you I also bought 2 7D's and a 70-200f2.8 II

I have had so much fun with the 400f2.8 both on the 7D and the 5DII

The 70-200 on the 5DII is an excellent portrait lens, I might not need the 135F2 much longer

            It sure is Bob

Did your 6 numbers come up Brian?
I'd love to go on a spending spree like that.

I got someother stuff as well - but we can go into that another time ....

Been creating a camera fund for sometime. Just waited until I KNEW what I wanted before I started spending it.

Was thinking about a 600F4 - but missed the secondhand one that came up

Canon EF 300mm f2.8 L IS II USM Lens is a dream lens in anyone's book and £3300 less than the 400mm f/2.8L IS and 1.45kg less weight.
I'd sell the 100-400mm and 1D3 for that lens, add the x1.4 extender and you have a 420mm f/4L lens (670mm on 7D).
The Canon EF 300mm f2.8 L IS II USM Lens is on my shopping list, ..... well .... it's on my wish list.

My 400 f2.8IS was just over £4k secondhand. The mk2's are still not available.

I dont find the weight a problem. As I have a 70-200F2.8 for the other 7d I reckon a 300 is too close - especially as I can put an extender on the 70-200 (or use the 70-300L if the light is good)

I take pictures of goats and birds with the 400 - anything less is a problem. Colin C uses his 500F4

For those that haven't seen what a big lens does - here is a goat, taken this morning, taken @ f4 (for the DOF of the face). Look at the grass in the background - priceless!

                        Uncropped, 7D, 400 f2.8, f4, iso 800, 1/2000

And his 300 2.8. I find the 300 2.8 superb for birds in flight and prefer it to the 500 when tracking the faster birds of prey, but that's what suits me for that type of photography.

Mike, do you need to buy new kit at the moment? If you have any kit you don't use then why not sell it and keep the money until you've really decided what you want. The 7D is a superb camera and produces excellent result but as you do wildlife now and again is it worth the cost for occasional use?
